About the Artwork:

The original painting, painted and sold in 2008, is 38" x 38" (100cm x 100cm), mixed media on wood. Azraq no Kioku was one of 30 paintings in Filiz's solo exhibit, 'Impressions', at Zara Gallery in Amman, Jordan in 2008. Kioku means 'remembrance, memory, recollection' in Japanese, and Azraq means 'the blue one' in Arabic, and is a town located in central Eastern Jordan.

Azraq is home to the Azraq Wetlands Preserve, an oasis that used to be home to some 347,000 migratory birds. Sadly, Azraq is now in a state of ‘ecological collapse’ due to rising population and a growing demand for water (it provides ¼ of Amman’s drinking water). The natural springs dried up in 1992 and migrant birds have been reduced to less than 1200. Today, Azraq is also home to one of Jordan’s largest refugee camps for families fleeing the Syrian civil war. The memory of what Azraq used to be is in stark contrast to what it is today, but it is, in a way, still an oasis, now for families in migration.
